creating a landscape in 3D studio max

using Photoshop and 3D studio max i have created a realistic landscape by using the displace modifier. By first creating an image in black and white i could map what my landscape would look like.

After doing this i would create a plane in 3D studio max and use the displace tool to create my landscape's shape. The displace tool will use the image i created earlier.

After the shape has been created using the diffuse tool i can increase the strength of the displace to change the height on the landscape.

After the shape has been made with the right strength i can then add a texture using the same image used to make the landscape by blending in photoshop. This is done by adding the texture i wanted to add onto the black and white image on a seperate layer using different effects until i get the effect i need.

after finding the correct effect i can add the texture to the landscape using the material editor and then create a render of the final stage of the landscape.
