nI had finished the final render for the trailer around two weeks before the final deadline leaving me with very little time to add effects using Adobe elements and stitching together the different renders. Many problems occurred during the final stages of the trailer such as putting it together so that it would play well. The number one problem was that almost everyone used a separate format and the software did not accept multiple file formats. I had to gather all the team members trailer scenes and then convert them for a final edit the day after, once this was completed some of the files did not work properly, with just two having the sound out of sync completely, I performed the file conversion a few more times tweaking the settings and the sound seemed to sync afterward. After that the software seemed to be too slow to work with and would still not have the different videos, I then used a separate movie editing software to stitch them together, windows movie maker, this allowed me to put them together but adding effects was very difficult such as sound fades and video transitions however after most of the day the trailer was ready and handed in time for the deadline with very little time to spare. However I believe the work was done at a high quality and there could have been little to be done to improve it, other than reducing the volume of the background music in some places, however movie maker made this very difficult to do even slightly.
nTime management for the trailer was well done at first, with a clear time table and what had to be done each week step by step, however as I approached the deadline this became more and more difficult since I was more focused on meeting the deadlines rather than keep track of what I had finished which was a mistake, and I should have spent the time keep up with the timetables and making sure everything was finished and no doubt would have saved me much time if I had. This is something I will keep in mind for the future when I create more models and will keep a better track of time and what had to be done next.
nHowever the largest problem was the render time, I had a good idea that it would take a long time to render, somewhere around a day however my final render took three days to complete one section of the trailer which really pushed back any work that I could have done in the meantime. Even at the end with a few hours to go due to a technical failure the trailer file became corrupt forcing me to start again, this time however I changed the settings on the lighting to reduce the amount of shadows produced by half rapidly increasing the render time for each part from three days to twelve hours, this did give me a better understanding of lighting however with little difference in the final quality.
nI found that working in a team was very rewarding, we were able to share ideas and work together to create a great end of year project to be shown at the digital showcase.
nAt first it was difficult figuring out what we had to discuss such as the name of the trailer, who would make what merchandise for the trailer, who would make which scene, which storyboard should we follow and everyone’s progress on the trailer. However once we started discussing we were able to quickly figure out who had to do what and how well we were doing as a whole.
nHowever overall there was good team communication however it was far too infrequent for us to keep track of everyone’s progress. This lead to a few problems such as taking a long time to figure out and agree on a team and game name, and what storyboard we would work to which resulted in some 3D models being wasted such as my own model an underground building was unable to be used in the final storyboard, however I did not know this for some time, this I could have used to work on more of my final environment. I believe if the team communicated more often we could have prevented some problems from occurring such as using different file formats instead of using just one.
nOverall I am happy with the end product of the trailer, it used the rendered footage that everyone had produced and came together without much trouble showing that we all knew what we were doing. I believe the trailer had a good balance of action and comical content with particularly the scenes produced by Charlotte and Tom were the most popular because of the spoken content. However I would like to believe that if given more time the trailer could have been done at a higher quality given more time during the editing process so that we could all discuss what else we could add or anything that needed tweaking. For example I would have liked to work more on the scene transitions a little more and added more of a glitchy camera effect instead of a fade to fit in with the first two scenes of the trailer.
nThe other members of the group each created their own trailer separately as well as adding other things to the trailer such as Charlotte created her own scene and then added a splash screen that can be used to the end of the trailer to great effect, while Lee had created an impressive intro scene, credits as well as own scene for the trailer. I think every member of the team is proud of what they have done for the trailer and what they had contributed to it.
